Lorne - Devlog

Week 1 - Day 1 To start this project we were planning to make an AR game but we weren’t able to because some stuff hadn’t been set up at school to make that happen. We didn’t find out that we couldn’t make an AR game until a couple days later so in the meantime we came up with the idea of a marble rolling game that used the tilt on the phone to control a small level. Week 1 - Day 3 This is the point where we had tried all our options to try and make a game on a mobile device but we didn’t have things set up and it would have taken too long to get things going so we had to change our idea to something that would work on mobile.

We came up with the idea of a 3D platformer.

Week 1 - Day 6 At this point we had built up most of our main mechanics and we were just building out the level and finishing off all our assets. It took quite a bit of trial and error to get the movement system to work nicely because the platforms that the player was jumping on were physics based and would swing in all directions when the player would land on them. To start with the game had a non physics based system where the player would constantly move down and stop on it’s own when it detected something below it. This system would overpower the physics system on the platforms and and so we changed to using the physics engine to move the player. This worked better but still took quite a bit of fine tuning to get things right.   Week 2 - Day 3 At this point all the mechanics were in the game. We added a checkpoint system because it was very difficult to get all the way through the game in one go.

Since all the mechanics were done I switched to working on assets and built the pipes and bricks that are at the end of the game.

Week 2 - Day 7

The last day was used to add the finishing touches to the game and connect up the main menu to the rest of the game.
